A Safe Place

Home has many diverse definitions. However, for numerous people one of the definitions is a safe place. My safe place is Kick Connection (KC ) where I practiced taekwondo. I was born in South Korea where taekwondo originated. When I go to KC, I feel that I can be myself without worrying about the difficulty with communication, school, and work. I am deaf and my involvement at KC has caused many people to become interested in learning American Sign Language (ASL). I am pleased to see people are willing to learn new things and happy to accept who I am.

  1. You mentioned that people accept you for who you are when you're at Kick Connection...and I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! It's an awesome feeling when you're accepted by others after normally being misunderstood. I don't know much about Tae Kwan Do, but my younger brother did it after school for a few years if that means anything :)

  3. JJ, the Kick Connection program sounds fascinating and fun! I have taken kickboxing classes for about a year now, and I love them. I agree with what you said about acceptance. It is very empowering to be able to express myself through movement, and it is an awesome stress reliever.

  8. I love the face that you can relate taekwondo back to your origins in South Korea, I'm sure that gives you an ever greater sense of home while at Kick Connection. It must be a good feeling to release stress and forget about life's worries while there!
